Burke has yet to undertake any of the 35 hours of Driver CPC training and is far from encouraged by what he hears from colleagues in the industry.
“I’ve heard lots of rumours that some of the training is not very good. It’s just a course with no examination at the end of it, so its value is questionable. It seems the people providing it are often professional trainers, rather than professional transport people.” He shares the view that older, very experienced drivers should not need retraining without good reason, such as a poor road safety record. “You have to question why they need training at this point in their lives, especially when trucks are safer than they have ever been.” Burke also doubts if the Driver CPC will do anything to improve the image of truck drivers among the general public. “The public know nothing about the scheme, so how can it possibly raise the profile of the industry?”
