threatens car deliveries

CAR TRANSPORTER drivers who deliver for Ford and Jaguar went on strike this week over compulsory redundancies and changes to their terms and conditions.

Half the 370-strong workforce at Ansa Logistics, members of the Transport & General Workers Union (T&G), are striking this week; the other half are due to take action next week after 60 drivers were scheduled for redundancy.

The union accuses the company of imposing a pay cut: it says deliveries of new cars to showrooms could be crippled within days.

Dave Williams, a senior shop steward at Ansa. is scathing about the company's attempts to reach a settlement during the obligatory 90-day notice period before any industrial action starts.

They altered their tactics con tinually during what was supposed to be a consultation period," he says. "I would have to say that it has been a complete and utter charade. The company never had any intention of finding a negotiated settlement in my view."

He adds that the action affects employees at Ansa's depots in Dagenham.Liverpool,Southamp ton and Moss End in Scotland.

Ansa is part of the giant Autologic Holdings group which also runs Walon and Axial in the UK.

An Ansa spokesman says: "The company has contingency plans in place for this dispute and the intention is to provide the customer with the best possible service in spite of the action."
