director general. Since the retirement of the previous incumbent, Norman Kay, on January 13, Mr Smith has been acting director general.
Mr Smith joined South Yorkshire from its West Yorkshire counterpart in 1979 as controller of manpower services. In 1980 he was appointed commercial director.
