Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

7 HE Dennis Maxim 30-ton-gross tractive unit tested by COMMERCIAL MOTOR (May 5 issue) completed a demonstration run to Italy and back last week while on loan to Hatter Shipping Services Ltd., of Grays, Essex.

Coupled to a Boden Mark 2 semi-trailer for the run, it carried a load of 20.5 tons of chemicals on the outward trip to gross 30 tons and returned with an 8-ton machine at a gross train weight of almost 18 tons.

It is reported that the Maxim, which has a Perkins V8 diesel, five-speed gearbox and two-speed axle, came through the demon stration without trouble. Average speed for the 642 miles between Dunkirk and Turin was 25.2 m.p.h. and fuel consumption in France was claimed to be 6.65 m.p.g. Running in Italy with various load conditions is said to have given a consumption return of 7.55 m.p.g. and the part-laden return trip to Dunkirk, which was completed at an average speed of 30.9 m.p.h., gave a consumption of 7.6 m.p.g. These figures compare with 7.5 m.p.g. at 30.8 m.p.h. when running at up to 40 m.p.h. fully laden on the CM road test and 6.8 m.p.g. at a 43.1 m.p.h. average speed on a laden five-speed test
