T N ORDER to offer a better service to

its customers, John Clines (Surfacing) Ltd., of Greet's Green, West Bromwich, sought B licences for four tippers in Birmingham last week, subject to the surrender of the vehicles' C licences. Objections were withdrawn following the amendment of the conditions to read: "Roadmaking and building materials to and from sites on which working as surfacing contractors, excluding West Bromwich Corporation sites, within 50 miles."

Mr. J. Cline, a director of the company, told the West Midland LA, Mr. J. Else, it had no intention of entering the haulage industry, but wished to be able to clear sites and carry materials for the contractors for whom it was working. The vehicles were at present occupied for 50 per cent of their time, he said.

Representatives from five building contractors gave evidence on behalf of Clines. Mr. E. Timmins, director, Greaves Organisation Ltd., of West Bromwich, said it was at present working on three sites at which Clines would be employed for varying amounts of time. When Clines' vehicles were on a site he would like to be able to ask the driver to do site clearance work. All its sites were telephone connected, said Mr. Timmins, and his firm could ring Clines for permission to use the vehicle and agree a rate for the job.

Mr. W. W. Dark, manager, H. J. Egginson Ltd., of Spark Hill, told Mr. Else that it would be more convenient if it could use Clines' vehicles since it only had one of its own and had to hire any other haulage required.

Mr. Else said that, taking into account the location of the sites that had been mentioned, he felt an operating radius of 30 miles would be appropriate. In granting the four vehicles, he pointed out to Mr. Clines that he would be able to operate any distance on his own business.
