ACOMPANY which had a licence granted in 1931, recently made what Mr. David Karmel, K.C., described as its first application since that date to the West Midland Licensing Authority to run excursions and tours and to add a number of picking-up points. The Railway Executive and 13 road operators objected.

Mr. Karmel, representing Samuel Johnson "Supreme," Ltd., Stourbridge, said that the application had been made to bring matters into line with 1950 conditions. Whereas the applicant had been operating since 1909, some of the objectors were newcomers. In 1939, the applicant's 17 vehicles were requisitioned and were never returned.

The reason why the company had not made an application earlier was because its policy was to use only new vehicles. It now had a fleet of 26 vehicles, with 10 more on order. Last year, with eight vehicles, the concern • earned £10,348 on excursions and tours alone. Because of increasing calls upon its services, the company asked for more vehicles.

For the past 30 years, said Mr. Karmel, the company had been picking up at various points .which did not appear on its licence. ' This had been done in the genuine 'belief that it was entitled to do so. In addition, the applicant asked for six more picking-up points.

The company also sOught to add a number of fresh destinations. The hearing was adjourned until August 31.
