Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

(CM 14 March). No union has ever created jobs for drivers, but they have lost plenty. Some hauliers who got sick of being told how to run their business simply closed down; or if they were doing own-account work, just contracted it out.

I worked as a driver and ownerdriver, and also in the ultimate unionised industry of printing.

My advice to any driver would be: don't waste money on union subs — put it in a pension or an ISA account instead.

In the same issue I was glad CM editor Will Shiers saw how good MSAs are in Europe compared to the often filthy and inhumane facilities drivers have to endure here in the UK.

My favourite is Ramstein, just off the A6 near Kaiserslauten. Good parking, a big shop selling everything and a first-class restaurant — all at reasonable prices. If only we had some half as good... DS Boyes Bramley, Leeds
