by Steve Sturgess • Cummins has introduced its next-generation fuel system already on the recently revamped QSK19. CM understands that the 19-litre is being reworked ready for automotive applications in Australia. It uses a common-rail system, with two pressure signal lines to the injector, one filling the injector with the required amount of fuel while the other effectively lengthens and shortens the pushrod with a column of fuel, thereby changing the timing of the injection. It's a trick system that removes all the electronics to the side of the engine making service of the unit injector less troublesome.
The fuel system is due to appear on Apex, Cummins' nextgeneration engine to replace the 14-litre. Industry insiders predict that it will be a 15-litre, dual overhead camshaft engine, with one cam handling the fuel system, the other working the valves. Development engines running in North America are understood to be pushing the 600hp 1450 kW) limit with 2,050Ibft (2,780 Nm) of torque.
