• There can be few in the industry who would argue against the principals behind the introduction of exhaust emission limits on diesel vehicles. However, the emissions limits just announced look like piling on the agony for workshops.
They will almost certainly entail computer control of diesel pumps, and the different ways by which those limits are met in Europe and the US could lead to a vast divergence of oil drain periods and the need to stock several different grades of engine oil.
Given then that the founding principals are sound the industry must look to the engine manufacturers. oil industry and electronics supplier to come up with a common, cost-effective approach.
Either way one cannot help but feel that the oil companies have most to gain. One way and they sell more oil; the other they sell smaller volumes of high-priced super synthetic lubricant.
In future pistons and liners will be replaced when oil starts getting past the rings and causing higher particulate emission, instead of being left until the power starts dropping off.
What is clear is that it will involve a lot of work and expense in the workshop. Let's hope that the operators who endorse the new controls are prepared to pay for them.
