• Overloading checks are to be stepped up in North Yorkshire with the introduction of a dynamic weighing site on the A19 near York at the end of this year.
North Yorkshire's county trading standards officer, Gordon Gresty, believes that the £250,000 Department of Transport weighbridge will act as a deterrent and reduce overloading incidents.
Out of the 2,829 trucks stopped in the county between April 1989 and 31 March 1990, a total of 744 were found to be over their maximum permitted weight. That figure represented a 3% increase on the previous 12 months.
