• Growing sales in Great Britain helped Daimler-Benz hold on to its number one position in the West European truck market last year.
During 1986 DB sold 64,918 trucks above 3.5 tonnes GVW to give it a 26.39% share of the European market which amounted to 246,033 vehicles last year — up 5.2% over 1985.
West Germany also overtook the UK last year as the biggest heavy truck market in Western Europe. ,bespite suffering a drop in shies, Iveco Ford held on to second place with an 18.06% share (44,442 vehicles). It was followed by Renault Vehicules Industriels with a 10.56% share (25,972), and Volvo with a 9.4% stake (23,138).
The combined sales of Leyland and Daf amounted to 22,117 vehicles — enough to give the new company an 8.99% share.
