• The National Freight Consortium's beleagured parcels division — National Carriers Roadline — is spending some million on new vehicles as part of its programme to update its fleet of collection and delivery vehicles. Over half of the latest orders are going to Leyland Trucks.
im Regular readers will have noticed that the price of Commercial Motor has increased this week by Sp to 80p. This increase, the first since 1985, is due entirely to increased costs which we can no longer absorb. We are sure that you will agree that, even at the new price, Commercial Motor represents unrivalled value for money in the industry.
• Last year the number of commercial vehicles running on British roads totalled 593,000. Within this figure the stock of vans and chassis cabs up-to-3.5 tonnes gross weight increased by 12,000 to 109,000, while the number of HGVs above 3.5 tonnes rose slightly to 438,000.
• A joint venture company formed by Yorkshirebased Onward Transport and West Country firm Fred'k A Baylis has bought the general distribution depot of BET Group United Transport's subsidiary, United Transport Contract Services, at Spring Road Industrial Estate, Ettingshall, Wolverhampton.
• Andrew Darnill, who wrote last week's detailed explanation of the Budget's main changes, works for accountants and management consultants Arthur Young, and not Andrew Young as stated.
