DTp MAINTENANCE MI This year's major road maintenance programme will cost the Department of Transport more than £152 million and restore 128km of motorway and nearly 322km of other trunk roads to good repair.
Al] the main motorways will be undergoing renewal work throughout the year but the DTp hopes serious delays will be avoided by using lane rental on the contracts of more than 30 of the biggest jobs in the programme. It has also published a leaflet telling drivers how they can find out about roadworks on their route before setting out on a journey.
The DTp has also announced that the Midland Links viaducts are strong enough to carry the traffic using them, including 38-tonners. Investigations of the viaducts have confirmed that there are adequate reserves of strength in the concrete structures to cope with current loads, A 25 million repair programme will start in the coming year, which the department says will involve few lane closures,
