Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Coventry-based SelfChanging Gears has launched a new retarder specifically designed for mounting on ZF S665, S6-80, and S6-90 sixspeed manual gearboxes used in PSV chassis.

The latest retarder has been developed from SCG's existing 8M6 unit and is based on a wet multiplate clutch using the oil shearing principle. It is claimed to be significantly lighter than comparable electromagnetic units, with a minimal residual drag to boost fuel economy.

Fitting the latest retarder involves the modification of the vehicle's propshaft and the use of a special adaptor kit which mounts on the rear of the gearbox. Total fitting time is around two days, but SCG says that retrofit units could be supplied in half that time. Dry weight for the retarder is around 77kg.

SCG claims that the new

imodel conforms to all EEC and Tempo 100 passenger safety requirements and that it can reduce brake relining costs. Price is around £2,000, depending on installation.

The first vehicle in the UK to be fitted with the SCG retarder is a Leyland Tiger coach operated by Burnley and Pendle Transport Company. The vehicle will be operated by the company's coaching unit, Viscount Central, and will be used extensively on UK and European tours.
