Transport Services cops the cash

• The police have been ordered to pay 2750 towards the costs of the defence of Transport Services (Lindsey) after Middlesbrough Magistrates dismissed a series of charges arising from the operation of a vehicle under the special types order.
The Scunthorpe-based company denied that a Volvo tractive unit and low loader trailer carrying a crane had exceeded the permitted gross and train weights. Transport Services also denied using a trailer without plating and testing certificates which was too wide. "Me procesution claimed that the Construction and use Regulations applied to the 108 tonne combination, which had lost the protection of the special types order because the movement had not been properly notified to Cleveland Highways and Bridge Authority.
John Charlesworth of Cleveland Highways and Bridges maintained that no proper notice of the movement had been given although when questioned by Michael Taterson, defending, he was unable to identify which vehicle he was referring to, to give any details, or to say whether any notice had been filed in respect of the vehicle concerned.
