Webwatch visited Ben Evans Commercials back in May 2007, but since the CV exporter has recently launched a new website, we decided to take another look.

Last time around, the company scored highly in the 'information. category, but impressed less when it came to appearance and navigation. We're pleased to say that the new site is both bolder and clearer than the old one a marked improvement.

Product search

To access the stock list, choose a category from the horizontal navigation bar: tractor units, rigids, tippers or trailer/plant. Although the last of these was empty at the time of writing, there did seem to be many more tippers in stock than during our previous visit.

Within each category, refine your search by selecting a make from the drop-down list. Alternatively, you can use the Search box at the top of the page. This feature was missing from the old site, and we're glad to see it included now.

For each vehicle that matches your criteria, the website provides you with a good-sized image, as well as brief details such as axle configuration and year of registration. Click 'More information' to find out, well, more information. For example, there is data on transmission type, mileage and chassis number. For most stock on the site, there are also multiple photographs taken from a range of angles click on any of these to see a larger version.

Each vehicle has a unique reference number so you can find it again later, and it's also possible to download any spec page as a PDF, which is another new and welcome feature.

There's also an online form should you wish to sell rather than buy a truck. Just fill in the details, upload a photo or two, and click 'Submit'. The firm will then get back to you.

One slightly unusual feature is the ability to register with the website. As a 'member'. you can specify the sorts of vehicles you are interested in and also sign up for Ben Evans Commercials' stock update emails. Since there are no prices listed on the site itself, this is the best way to find out about good deals first.

The website also contains a map to the dealership's West Midlands base (click on 'Find Us') and one more online form, this time to send the company a message ('Contact Us').

Conclusion

Ben Evans Commercials' old website was by no means bad, but the new one is certainly better. And we didn't even find any teething problems...
