• Only 7% of European road haulage journeys are legal, according to academic Dr John Whiteleg.

Speaking last week on BBC Radio 4's environmental programme Costing the Earth, the head of Lancaster University's Geography department said his research showed only 7% of journeys involved "total adheranee to EC social regulations and the legal basis of haulage".

Whiteleg said costs would rise by 25% if hauliers operated legally and warned: "There's no way that the rail industry can compete with a road haulage industry that is able to reap such benefits from this level of illegality," But on the same programme FTA director David Green refuted the allegations: "The tachograph chart is a record on this aspect and provides undeniable evidence."
