Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• In your issue of 13-19 August, you ran a news story headed "Hazexam fears eased".

In this you stated that Chemfreight ran the first of the new courses, and that 21 drivers took the examinations. In fact, we ran two courses from 29 June, one here at Runcorn, and the other at Truckworld, West Thurrock, with 21 drivers in total on both courses.

Our approval from the Department of Transport restricts us to 16 drivers per course, and we would like to make it clear that we were not working outside that.

Also, you stated that Chemfreight was "...a little bit miffed..." because of the time taken for the examination results to come through from the DVLA. No one in Chemfreight can remember saying that. In any case, although the certificates are issued by the DVLA, the examination results are published by the City & Guilds of London Institute.

We have now completed 24 new courses, including explosives, and the results are coming through at a good rate. The Department of Transport and City & Guilds Institute have worked hard to get the new arrangements in place, and have been most helpful to us.

The drivers are enjoying the courses, and are very pleased to get the vocational certificates. In all, the new scheme is proving to be very successful, and will make a major contribution to the safe transport of dangerous goods by road in Great Britain.

James MacKay, Chemfreight, Runcorn, Cheshire.
