• Every motorway service area (MSA) in the UK is to be sold off to the highest bidder, following the Government's decision to deregulate the planning and acquisition process.
Responsibility for identifying and gaining planning consent has now been passed to the private sector, which will deal directly with the local authorities. "Although the Government will continue to guarantee and maintain minimum stan dards at MSAs, all sites held at present by the DOT will be offered on the open market," says the DOT.
MSA operators such as Granada and Forte have welcomed the decision, although they stress that details have yet to be announced.
