ployed by New port haulier Anthony Beese has been told by South Wales LA John Mervyn Pugh to spend a day watching a vehicle inspection following a series of vehicle prohibition notices. Beese, trading as AG Beese Transport, had sought the renewal of his international licence for 12 vehicles and eight trailers, but Mervyn Pugh only authorised seven vehicles and trailers for a year.

There was something drastically wrong with the company's maintenance, said Mervyn Pugh, and he was not going to consider giving it a fiveyear licence until it had been rectified.

Requiring the company's vehicles to be inspected by an outside contractor every three weeks, Mervyn Pugh said that director Anthony Beese and his fitter should watch an inspection to familiarise themselves with the techniques.

Beese said the problems had been caused by allowing drivers to take their vehicles home at the weekend and only inspecting the vehicles every seven weeks. He had fallen into the trap of putting too much trust in drivers.

The company is now operating only four vehicles.
