Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Taking trucks through the Dartford Tunnel could be costing the transport industry as much as £20,000 an hour.

A truck with driver wastes 212.30 an hour when caught in a jam, according to Department of Transport figures. Counting the toll of £1.60, hauliers could be shelling out almost £14 a time to go through the tunnel during peak periods such as rush hours, weekends and bank holidays.

Good weather on a single bank holiday could mean up to 95,000 vehicles using the tunnel. During peak hours about 6,500 vehicles — 25% of them CVs — queue to use the tunnel on either side, resulting in delays of an hour or more.
