Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Talks on the proposed management buyout at Special Trucks — formerly the old Scammell Motors Plant at Watford — are still continuing, and could be resolved by the end of the month.

Since the Leyland Daf mer ger earlier this year, Special Trucks' managing director Vic Wilkes has been trying to put together a buyout package with the aim of building those specialist off-road and heavy haulage trucks which will not be transferred to Leyland Dats main assembly hall when the Watford plant closes next year.

Wilkes says: "We are still talking, and looking to resolve the whole issue either way by the end of September." Although he is giving away few details, he says he is "more optimistic than pessimistic" that a buyout deal will be struck.

If a new company emerges from the remnants of Special Trucks, it could be producing trucks — possibly bonnetted versions of the Scammell Landtrain and fire tender chassis by the end of 1988.
