• Daimler-Benz has revised the engine and driveline of its 52-seater Mercedes 0303 integral coach. From now on all 0303s built at D-B's Mannheim bus plant will be fitted with the 260kW (354hp) turbocharged 0M442A vee-eight engine as standard. This engine is already fitted in the UK on the Merceds 1635 tractive unit.
According to Daimler-Benz the switch to the more powerful 0M442A engine has been made to give improved fuel economy and greater flexibility.
A 216kW (290hp) naturallyaspirated version of the veeeight engine, designated the 0M442, will be available as an option. Its maximum torque of 1,098Nm (8101bft) is produced over a wider rev range of between 1,000 and 1,500rpm.
The latest 0303s also gain an uprated clutch with an asbestos-free lining and a revised G04 six-speed syncromesh gearbox. D-B's EPS gearshift system will be available as an option.
The optional retarder offered on longer 0303 models now has a full electronic six-step control, enabling it to operate as a road speed governer on downhill running, where maximum speeds can be pre-set.
The interior and exterior noise levels on the 0303 have been further reduced by a revised viscous fan and new insulation material in the engine compartment.
