Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• During July more than 30% of all heavy trucks above 29tonnes sold in the UK were fitted with Cummins engines, according to the diesel engine builder. This is only the second time that Cummin's heavy truck engine market share has exceeded 30% since 1985.

During the first seven months of 1987 its share of the heavy truck engine market, based on vehicles sold, was 24.1% or 2,322. This compares with 21.7% for the same period last year. Volvo registered 1,960 trucks up to the end of July, putting it in second position as an engine supplier.

Cummins' improved share is due mainly to an 8.0% increase in the overall market and the larger 38.3% portion taken by UK manufacturers in the 29tonne-plus sector in July.

ERF, which is a major Cum mins user, moved into second place for the month, behind first placed Volvo.

Sales of Darlington-built B Series engines continue to gain ground in the 3.5-16.26-tonne GVW two-arded rigid market. In July an 18.8% share was achieved by the registration of 379 units, bringing the total to 2,517 for the period.

In the heavy-duty purposebuilt mini/midi-bus market Cummins also leads with 148 B Series engined vehicles registered during July.

The Shotts, Lanarkshire plant which builds 10and 14-litre Cummins engines is enjoying its highest ever levels of production and is currently producing 55 units per day. Cummins Darlington is also enjoying a busy period, producing around 80 engines per day, according to the engine builder.
