country today is remarkable, and it is difficult to visualize any handling problem which has not already been solved by the ingenious and resourceful ufacturers of this type of equipment—if not in the UK, then abroad. irtually all fork-lift truck makers seem to be very ready to innovate and it existing models to meet the needs of users; and the special rigs available most general-purpose trucks are astonishingly varied.

The 6,000 to 26,000 lb.-capacity models have a lift height of 216 in. and some models may be powered by petrol or LP Gas as an alternative to diesel power.
Lancers Machinery include in their eight series of fork-lift trucks and side loaders at least 27 separate models with lifting capacities ranging from 2.250 lb. to 55.000 lb.. the latter at 36 in. 1.c.

the inclusion of the Iron Fairy Garnet in a buyers' guide to fork-lift trucks the special features of this mobile crane justify its mention here. Made by the British Hoist and Crane Co. Ltd., Compton, Berks, the Garnet has the capability of transporting heavy loads through openings 8 ft. 6 in. high, and can handle a safe working load of 4 tons at a radius of 8 ft. in all positions of slew without the use of jacks or out riggers. giving a top road Speed of 30 m.p.h., make the Garnet ,an attractive proposition with a host of applications.
Cambrian Equipment Ltd.. an associated company of Powells at Burry Port, produce a hand-elevating truck, Speedilift, with a capacity of 300 lb. and a maximum lifting height of 45 in. Fitted with removable forks, the weight, minus forks, is 89 lb., and it can be slid on to the floor of a vehicle up to 36 in. high.
Cleco Electric Industries Ltd., Cleco Works, Foundry Square, Leicester, build side-loaders and dual side-loaders in capacities from 2.400 lb. to 24,000113. which may be powered by petrol, diesel, LP Gas or battery. Deck width, height of lift and so on, may be tailored to individual requirements.
Cleco trucks may be flame-proofed for special applications and, for use in wood yards, 3-ft.-diameter pneumatic tyres may be fitted.
Conveyancer Fork Trucks Ltd., Liverpool Road, Warrington, make an extremely wide range of fork-trucks; so wide, in fact, that no brief summary can do them justice. They range from model E15-20 with 1,500 lb. capacity at 20 in. 1.c. to TO 2-24 Conveyancer-Shorland with 12.000 lb. capacity at 24 in. 1.c. Many of the smaller-capacity models are battery powered, but petrol, diesel or LP Gas are optional on certain models.
The Overlander, with 3,500 lb. capacity at 20 in. 1.c., has been specially designed for yard or site work, and it will handle loads of palletized bricks, pre-cast concrete flooring blocks or the like, from vehicles to point of use, or store. The tractor is equipped with auxiliary hydraulics to enable additional attachments to be fitted The TC10-24 and 12-24 models can be used with optional fittings attached to the mast, such as a steel beam, ideal for movement of steel strip or wire coils, or a crane boom, with obvious utility.
The Conveyancer-Raymond Hy-Drive dual-purpose reach-fork-truck can be used for order picking in stores or for orthodox pallet handling. It can lift 1,800 lb. at centre of pallet cage or 4,500 lb. at 20 in. 1.c., with •platform removed.
An exclusive, dual-fuel system enabling the driver to quickly change over from LP Gas to petrol, or vice versa, offers many advantages to Conveyancer users, enabling trucks so fitted to operate in reasonably well ventilated buildings without distressing effects on personnel.

Matbro Ltd., Matbro Works, Horley, Surrey. produce a range of trucks with capacities from 4,000 lb. to 20.000 lb. at 24 in. load centres. Diesel model 40 lifts 4,000 lb. powered by a Perkins P3 engine: model 50. with the same engine, lifts 5,0001h.; model 60. with Fordson petrol or diesel engine, has a capacity of 6.000 lb.. and model 60C also lifts 6.000 lb. but is powered by the Perkins P3 engine. Models 70 and 70C lift 7.000 lb. Model 70 is Fordson powered and 70C uses the Perkins P3. which Mathro also employ in Model 80C, of 8.000 lb. capacity. The companion model 80 is powered by a four-cylinder diesel or petrol engine of 52 b.h.p.
Matbro's heavier models comprise the 100. with 10,000 lb. capacity; 120, of 12,000 lb. capacity: 150 of 15.000 lb.: 180 ot 18,000 lb,: and 200, lifting 20.000 lb. For such heavy-duty machines forward and reverse speeds up to 23 m.p.h. seem noteworthy.
Two other Mathro developments must he mentioned. Their Mastiff. Mastiff Minor and Super 1 oadstar cross-country fork-lift trucks with capacities of 4.000 to 8.0001h. were pioneered by Mathro in 1950. particularly for soft ground.

The Mathro Swing Lift models S60 and S80, carrying 6,000 or 8,000 lb., utilize a 90° slewing mast, and in conjunction with an 85° steering lock they permit much more efficient warehousing than conventional trucks.
John McRobbie (Atomak Products) Crieff, Perthshire, produces a small (15 cwt.) capacity fork-lift truck powered by the Lister LD2 twin-cylinder, aircooled, direct-injection diesel engine_ Variants are available lifting up to 3,000 lb. to 102 in., and prices range from £925 to £995 10s. Od. Another useful device made by Atornak converts a standard Massey Ferguson tractor into a 1-ton-capacity fork-lift truck with a lifting height of 114 in. With a reduced lift of 15 cwt., a lifting height of 144 ;n, is possible. Price of the 1-ton model is £365, increased by £44 if the front counterweight fitment is required. Atomak make other useful equipment such as self-dumping hoppers, fitting any standard fork-lift truck, and an interesting crane fork attachment with an automatic load-clamping device, in capacities ranging from 10 cwt. to 5 tons.
Powell and Co., Burry Port, Carmarthen, make a useful pedestrian-controlled. narrow-aisle stacker called the Vertostacker with a capacity of 2,000 lb. at 20 in. 1.c. It will load pallets up to 12 ft. high from a 6 ft. aisle and is powered with a 24V. 183 a.h. Exide Ironclad battery with a four-year guarantee.
Joshua Shaw and Sons Ltd., Providence Works. 483 Bradford Road. Batley. ire specialist manufacturers of 3-, 4and 5-ton-capacity side-loaders much used in the timber trade, but equally useful wherever long. bulky loads are involved. Mobility, speed and ease of maintenance
are features of Shaw side-loaders, which have the unusually high road speed of 27 m.p.h. A 200-hr. lubrication system minimizes servicing.
Wessex Industries (Poole) Ltd., West Street, Poole, Dorset, market a range of electrically powered fork-lift trucks with capacities ranging from 1,500 lb. at 15 in. 1.c. to 6,000 lb. at 24 in. Lc. The larger models feature the " Acro-Smooth " transmission permitting smooth, variable speeds from zero to full speed without pauses or sudden surges. The EF range (2.000 to 3,000 lb. capacity) claims an exclusive " high-low" ratio. The forks, when telescoped, are 83 in. high, yet when extended, loads can be lifted t. 138 in.
Yale and Towne Ltd, Wednesfield, Staffs, produce a very wide range of fork-lift trucks with capacities from 1.200 to 10,000 lb. Pedestrian-controlled trucks, all powered electrically. lift from 1.500 to 6,7201K and ridor-controlled models range from 1,200 to 10.000 lb.
Models BRBSAT 20, 30 and 40, are electric straddle pallet-stacking trucks carrying respectively 2,000, 3,000 and 4.000 lb. at 24 in. 1.c. Model RL4N is an electrically powered rider platform truck of 2 tons capacity. Three electric reach trucks are available, BRBE 20 M. BRBE 30 L and BRBE 40 L, carrying respec
tively 2,000, 3,000 and 4.000 lb. The smallest-capacity rider-controlled, forklift truck made by Yale is the VE 1224 which is battery powered and lifts 1.200 lb. Heavier fork-lift trucks in the K 51 series range from the K 51 SAT 30 of 3,000 lb. to K 51 AT 100, of 10,000 lb. capacity.
Mention must also be made of a further series of models with capacities of 3.000 to 6,000 lb. where diesel, petrol or LP Gas power is optional, and either cushion or pneumatic tyres may be specified.
