THE chairman and vice-chairman of Billingham Urban District Council have been censured by the council for withdrawing opposition to the last application by United Automobile Services, Ltd., to raise fares.
Mr. F. M. Dawson, clerk to the council, said that in accordance with council instructions, an objection had been lodged against the application, but before the case was heard by the Licensing Authority, Cllr. L. H. Smith, chairman, and ClIr. J. V. McIvor, vicechairman, decided that the proposed increases would not have a great effect on local residents. Certain agreements had been made with the company and the council's objection was withdrawn.
alr. Smith said that the withdrawal had been made in the town's best interests and contended that the council had acted hastily in deciding to oppose the application.
