A motor-vehicle driver was recently summoned at York for dangerous driving, his offence being that of failing to stop at an automatic traffic signal. The Royal Automobile Club defended.
It appears that a policeman had acted for some years as traffic controller at this point, but a few months ago an automatic signal was installed in place of him. Owing to the driver failing to see the signal, he became involved in a minor accident, but the R.A.C. solicitor was able to show that the motorist was totally ignorant of the presence of the signal and that there was no preliminary warning to indicate that the trafficcontrolling apparatus was in operation..

Manchester's Bus Scheme.
The tramways and finance committees of Manchester Corporation have now prepared joint reports in regard to the proposal to spend £110,000 on the purchase of motorbuses to replace existing tramways. After a consideration of different methods of financing the purchase it has been decided to recommend the borrowing of £110,000 for the purpose of acquiring buses for the existing route, No. 53. It is also suggested that the policy of maintaining, and, if possible, increasing the tramways renewal and depreciation fund be approved, and that the obsolete expenditure, amounting to about £35,245, be defrayed by charging this amount to the renewal and depreciation fund.
