• Marcus Layton, the co-owner and director of United Trailers (UK), died of cancer last Thursday; he was 49.

A friendly but tenacious individual, Layton was intensely proud of his roots, his family, his trade and the high quality of workmanship with which he was always associated.

Sorely disappointed by the original United Trailers' sudden collapse at the end of 2000, he willingly accepted the challenge of rejuvenating the old riverside factory in Wisbech. Aided by co-directors Dave Nichol! and Graham Waring, and the good faith of many of his old suppliers and customers, he established a top management team—many of his old workforce joined him.

Since then, under Layton's leadership, the new United Trailers UK has grown into a successful British truck and trailer bodybuilder.

Throughout his yearlong battle with illness Laton was determined to leave a sound legacy of the highest manufacturing standards and top-quality products. This he seems to have achieved.

Layton will be sadly missed by his wife Sue, son Nigel and his family, community and industry friends—including those at Commercial Motor
