Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

quipment he ARO Machinery Co. is !arming to introduce a new eneration of equipment for rotor body repair at the 1969 1otor Show. This comprises le N169 and N179 pincer-type isistance (spot) welding guns. to NDP 38 twin spot gun and NO new master control units, te CD 112 and ID 112.

Resistance (spot) welding is le strongest and fastest method f welding for body repair and ,R0 Machinery has concentrated

n producing a complete set of quipment which will provide -le answer to all the body reairer's problems. The two incer-type guns share a new mture which helps to ease the ody repairer's main problem— le speed of access to welding ositions.

The guns are of a new design rhich enables the throat depth —that is the distance between le electrode arms—to be -icreased quickly, using only one and. To open the arms on the I 169 and N 179 the operator imply pulls back the operating andle; he can then Move the un into the position where the veld is to be made and, when he gun is in place, push back the iandle to close the electrodes. his method of opening the dectrodes of the gun is claimed

o be much quicker than any irevious way and will save time in the repairjob.

The two new models N 169 Ind N 179 are basically similar ams with the N 179 being 50 ier cent more powerful because t has a higher rated transformer. 'he N 169 has a secondary :urrent in short circuit of 7,000 imp at 2.2 volts while the N 179 las a secondary current in short ircuit of 8,800amp at a secondiry voltage of 3v. The N 179 is herefore recommended for use vhere longer electrode arms are leecled to reach the welding iosition or where thicker gauges if sheet need to be welded, iarticularly on commercial Where it is impossible to weld rom bath sides the NDP 38 twin ipot gun is available for a singleiided approach. All the 'N' ange of guns have new six-pin ilugs which are tested to interrational safety standards.

To help those supervising ,ehicle repair to maintain a high itandard of work among their iperators without long and

difficult training ARO equipment is used with automatic master control units. Two new master control units introduced for work in this field are the CD 112 and 112. Both these units control weld time and the CD 112 also controls weld current intensity. A new feature is a fully transistorized timing circuit which makes repair unnecessary. Should a fault occur, the small printed circuit is removed and a replacement inserted. Contacts are now easier to change by removing pins in the contactor and the six-wire plug is unbreakable and complies with safety specifications. Additionally, the time control is not now marked in seconds but in a straightforward calibration, For moving this comprehensive set of welding guns and master control units and a selection of electrode arms around the body shop there is the ARO trolley, the complete equipment being known as the Special Repair Set. Blind fastener

An extremely versatile and reliable blind fastener, suitable for attaching metal to metal, or wood, wood to wood or plastics and metal to plastics, is being introduced in the UK by Avdel. Known as the Cherry Drive highclench rivet, it has applications in a wide variety of trades and industries, including vehicle bodywork and freight containers, and all types of cladding and panelling.

A particular advantage claimed for the Cherry Drive rivet is that no special fixing tools are needed, only a drill and a hammer or mallet being required.

The rivet is a two-piece fastener, comprising an aluminium alloy rivet shell together with a positively retained stainless steel central driving pin. After placing a rivet of the appropriate diameter and grip length into a pre-drilled hole, the fixing is made by driving the headed central pin into the body of the rivet until it is flush with the rivet head. The central pin causes the split shank of the rivet to expand and thus provide positive high ments of the British Standards. It has a triple-skin heat exchanger which ensures that every part of the outer casing, even the nose cone, is air-cooled down to a temperature which complies with the most stringent safety measures. It is powered by a full scale Waltham pressure-jet oil burner at the rear of the combustion chamber and only heated air travels through the heat exchanger to the nose cone.

All the other AndrewsWaltham air heaters that are now available including Models 180, 90 and Unit Heater, are fully automatic, and thermalautomatic models incorporate a built-in thermostat to maintain the air space at a predetermined tempera ture .

Further details can be obtained from Portable Power Tools Ltd., 151 Langside Road, Glasgow, S2. strength retention. With most materials, the grip length of the rivet is equal to the thickness of the sheets being fastened, the split shank expanding on the blind side of the panel. When fixing into wood, however, the overall length of both the rivet and the pre-drilled hole can be less than the total thickness of the sheet materials. The split shank then expands into the wood, and no part of the fixing is visible from the blind side, Rivets are available in diameters of tin., kin. and kin., in a full range of grip lengths up to 0.975in. They are offered in a choice of head styles in either of two versions—standard and tamperproof. The latter is TIR approved, and has special applications in the freight container industry.

Fluorescent penetrants

Two descriptive booklets on fluorescent penetrants available from Burma h-Castrol Industrial are 'Tetmor Fluorescent Penetrant' and 'Britemor (S) Fluorescent Penetrant Process".

Tetrnor fluorescent penetrant is a non-flammable solution of organic chemicals in a volatile chlorinated solvent. It is used to detect surface cracks in ferrous, non-ferrous and a wide range of non-metallic components. The process is "single-stage". Tetmor being applied by dipping, brushing or spraying with no intermediate washing stage. After application, the solvent evaporates leaving a dry deposit which fluoresces under ultraviolet light.

Britemor (S) fluorescent penetrant process is also a fluorescent material used for crack detection. its special feature is its excep tional penetrating power which shows up extremely fine cracks. The process consists of three

stages—application, waterwashing, and development. The developer, which can be either Britemor dry powder developer (BPD 2) or Britemor spray developer, is used to draw out the penetrant from the depths of the cracks so that the fluorescence is displayed on the surface of the component. By its nature, this process also indicates surface porosity.

The booklets contain full information on the characteristics and methods of application of Tetmor and Britemor (S). Obtainable free on application to: Special Products Division, Burmah-Castrol Industrial Ltd., Burmah-Castrol House, Marylebone Road, London, NW1.

Cab air conditioner

A cab air-conditioner—Cool-1— introduced by Eaton Yale and Towne Inc., has an evaporator providing 24,500 Btu per hour for cooling external air with an ambient temperature of 90deg F and 50 per cent relative humidity. The unit has dual controls and deflectors that permit the driver or passenger to select air flow independently.

The air flow, directed to a sleeper cab bunk, can be adjusted to the off-duty driver's comfort without affecting the rest of the cab.

Dual temperature-sensor valves keep the air conditioner working at full efficiency at all times. A separate fin sensor cycles the compressor off and on to melt ice that might form on the evaporator.

To increase dependability, the unit's two blowers are driven by separate heavy-duty motors. The blowing system still operates even if one motor should fail.

The air-conditioner is built to fit on any truck roof. A fouroutlet cabinet eliminates the need for a big, roof-weakening hole in the cab roof.

Racking

The key component in new Speedlock drive-in racking, which is being launched in the UK by Dexion. is the drive-in bracket or arm, engineered to meet the cantilever and shock loads imposed with this system. Speedlock drive-in also uses a tapered hook and spring safety lock for location in the upright. Each bracket is a one-piece pressing Ain. thick, and incorporates two safety locks. The pallet rails are of lipped channel section and supplied in standard lengths, which can be spliced on site to give any desired length required.

With any drive-in racking system, the portal beam to upright connection is important and provides lateral rigidity of the structure. In new Speedlock drive-in this connection is made by means of four fin. diameter interference fit bolts passing through holes at the top of each upright. Tests have shown that this is more than 90 per cent as strong as a welded joint.

Structures can be built up to 33ft high providing safe storage for any load up to 2 tons per pallet at an economical cost. Made by: Dexion Ltd., Dexion House, Empire Way, Wembley, Middx.

Salvage trailers
