Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Western area of the Road Haulage Association has reached agreement on quarry rates with the Western Roadstone Centre. Following threats by hauliers (CM August 29) of withdrawal of their vehicles because of inadequate rates, the WRC asked for a meeting with the RHA. A series of meetings has resulted in a compromise solution which has been agreed by hauliers and quarry owners, and threats of vehicle withdrawal have been called off.

The new rates schedules which have now been agreed do not meet all of the operators' demand but go a long way to doing so.

An important feature is that a common schedule has been agreed for the South Gloucestershire and East Mendipps quarries.

, Possibly more important, the WRC has promised to attend a meeting before November to discuss rates for 1970, and both sides have consented to accept arbitration if there is disagreement over the new schedules. RHA Western area secretary Mr. J. Cox told CM this week that he was particularly gratified at this agreement to go to arbitration, though he hoped it would not be necessary. For his part he would be prepared to accept arbitration by the Licensing Authority's clerk or by one of the recognized Road transport journals COmmercial Motor for instance. And he would be quite happy for independent members of the quarrymasters' association to sit in on the arbitration proceedings.
