CARDIFF CONCERNED OVER FARES

A HINT that Cardiff bus fares may have .1-1.to be increased was given last week by Mr. J. F. Siddall, transport manager. He reminded the transport committee that the last fare increase was in December, 1-956, and since then major wage awards had been absorbed instead• of being passed on to the travelling public. Many other undertakings had already been compelled to raise their fares.

Mr. R. L. Davies, city treasurer, said

that during the 10 summer weeks, which were the best for income, there was a small profit of £2,686, which reduced the deficit for April 1-August 30 to £1,695. The Empire Games had boosted their summer income by £2,500.

The committee accented a recommendation that the financial, situation should be kept under review.

MIDDLESBROUGH TO TRY NEW LOW BUS

APROTOTYPE bus, designed to cope with Middlesbrough's low bridges, is to be built for the corporation by the Northern Counties Motor and Engineering Co., Ltd. It will be based on a Dennis chassis with the lower deck floor level with the boarding platform. On the upper deck there will be a centre gangway. Middlesbrough's bus receipts have shown the first upward trend for more than a year. During the month ended September 6, they carried 3,542,847 passengers, an increase of 33,966 over last year's figure.

NEW MOTORWAY ANNOUNCED

PLANS for a new motorway connecting Birmingham with the Ross Spur Motorway were announced this week by the Minister of Transport. It will start north of Twyning (Glos.) as an extension of the Ross Spur, which is now under construction, and end 27+ miles farther north near Lydiate Ash (Worcs.).
