Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MEW from M. G. Rowe (Motors) '41 Doublebois, Ltd., Liskeard, Corn

wall, is a 20-ton-gross six-wheeler. It has a double-drive rear bogie and is thought to be the first application in this country of the Hendrickson all-rubber suspension to a layout of this type.

The Hendrickson design, which employs four rubber cushions as the suspension medium, incorporates two 1-section equalizing beams to locate the axles in conjunction with two radius arms. All oscillating points are rubberbushed, eliminating the need of lubrication.

The two spiral-bevel axles are Eaton 32M units of 6.68 to 1 ratio, giving a total loaded rating for the bogie of 34,000 lb. A power divider incorporating a third differential is mounted above the drive housing for the forward axle and incorporates a differential lock to give greater traction under adverse conditions. The third differential is locked from the driver's cab through a hydraulic linkage.

An A.E.C. AV.470 7.7-litre oil engine is installed. In this application it is rated to produce 125 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m. and 325 lb.-ft. torque at 1,100 r.p.m. The five-speed gearbox has a direct-drive top ratio.

Channel-section frame side-members have a constant depth of 8i in. from the rear hangers of the front springs to the end of the frame. Flanges are 3-in. wide and the material used is i-in. thick. The channel is boxed over the rear bogie and in the centre of the 18-ft. wheelbase, whilst internal flitches are fitted for the full length of the constantdepth portion. Tyres are 9.00-20-in. (12-ply). The hydraulic brakes have air assistance.

This and two other Rowe models have been on show in the forecourt of West Brompton Station, London, this week.

One of the other vehicles is an 11-ft. 8-in.-wheelbase 8-tonner with Leyland 0.350 oil engine driving an Eaton 16,500 Mk. 111 two-Sneed axle through an Albion six-speed gearbox. The gearbox has an overdrive top ratio of 0.76 to L giving a high maximum speed on the road, whilst the 12 forward gear ratios make the vehicle suitable as a tipper.

The lorry is intended for long-distance haulage of clay and the 7i-cu.-yd. body has a tipping angle of 65°.

The other model displayed is a 7-tonner with a Jennings cattle container body. 545
