Not everybody needs an LEZ-compatible truck, as Jamie McDonald rightfully points out. Based at a site not far from Besthorpe in rural Norfolk, he runs independent dealership RJM Commercials. “A lot of the operators in my part of the world never go to London – and they don’t want to,” he observes.

While used sales have definitely picked up after what he says was a slow summer, McDonald reports that demand still isn’t huge. “We’re not setting the world alight,” he remarks.

However, the rental side of his business is buoyant as local operators start hiring trucks to help haul in the sugar beet crop. His customers tend not to buy expensive, top-of-the-range vehicles and he still finds that the trucks that sell best are those with a price tag of around £20,000 to £30,000.

“You can get an 07or 08-registered Volvo FM for around £25,000,” he points out. It will get you into the LEZ without penalty too.
