Vehicles
Trailers account for around 15% of Manheim sales across the country. They are split into two main age groups: 3-5 years old, and 10-15 years old. The types of products vary, but the majority are dry-freight trailers, followed by curtainsiders and fridge semi-trailers.
September and October are the strong months for the Christmas period, while February, when firms scale down, tends to be slower.
Prices
There's a wide variation on residuals and, as with the tractors, this is down to specification. The more mod cons a trailer has the higher the asking price. Residuals on older stock tend to be closer in actual price than late-year
stock. They may look identical, but could be very different and priced accordingly. Make sure you know what the trailer's specs are before bidding.
Manufacturers
All trailer manufacturers MI have been represented at Manheim to some degree, but Crane Fruehauf and Montracon stand out.
Buyers
Of all Manheim's products it's the trailers that attract most end users. Older stock will go overseas, but the fact that a trailer can be given a decent once-over because its components are exposed means end users can reduce the element of doubt. This is reflected in the 80-90% conversion rate per sale.
What to look for
For export the demand is for any older flatbeds. Even older curtainsiders are being snapped up and converted to meet these requirements. Post-1995 curtainsiders do well, as does any fridge trailer from 1999. Lowloaders are always popular.
What to avoid
Old dry-freight stock, unless you are exporting there are too many in circulation.
Conclusion
Trailers are good news. If a trailer has decent specification it will fetch the right money. Trailers rarely go under the hammer twice and that is a good sign.
