Tester's implessioir The Canter from Mitsubishi, with only a few months behind it, is in its seventh generation (and now badged Fuso). It has increased cabin space, always an issue with the cab-forward design, thanks to adjustment of the windscreen and tumblehome angles and the now dash-mounted gear stick. Power is from a 3.0-litre unit producing 125hp with 297Nm of torque
Work has been done to refine the Canter's driving ability. It pulls smoothly enough with the engine supplying adequate levels of torque, though the clutch is quite sharp on pickup. The shift is notchy and doesn't like to be rushed you have to work with the transmission when constantly changing.
Body control is a lot more composed than before, with cross winds providing little interference and through the corners the chassis feels tighter.
The increase in cab space is clearly evident, taller people will no longer feel wedged into the driver's seat. Cab access now allows hopping in and out with ease without cracking your ankles/knees. The tipper unit is supplied by Tipmaster, with a mesh inf ill at the front to protect the cab.
