RAIL-FREIGHT operator EWS International is to run freight trains on the French rail network.
The UK's main rail-freight operator received the go-ahead to operate in France after it was granted its safety certificate.
Starting this winter EWS plans Lo run trains on behalf of a new French company,Euro Cargo Rail, which will handle the marketing and trading side of the business. EWS will be the third rail-freight operator in France The service will start on routes in Northern France, including CalaisTourcoing and Calais-Dunkirk.
EWS chief executive Keith Heller reports that Euro Cargo Rail aims to provide customers with an "attractive alternative to road transportation".
The European Commission plans to increase the proportion of rail freight services in Europe from the current 8% of the total freight market to 15% by 2010.
