THE FREIGHT Transport Association has attacked a report which suggests that the London congestion charge should be raised to £11.40 for trucks but cut to £3.60 for ears.
According to the Financial Times, the study looked at the costs and benefits of congestion charging, concludingit had been -highly beneficial" for London.
Researchers Georgina Santos of Oxford University and Gordon Fraser of Cambridge University also propose charging vans £7.40.
They justify the £3.60 charge for cars by saying they "cause less congestion, drive shorter distances on average and are more easily discouraged by price than vans or trucks".
A spokeswoman for the PTA says: "Of course vans and trucks will not be 'discouraged' from operating in London by the congestion charge — they just have their costs increased to the dismay of their operators and customers and, ultimately, consumers.
"The authors of this latest research seem to have failed to recognise that without vans and trucks to service and deliver its essential needs central London would cease to function," she adds.
