fIERCEDES-BENZ has launched lightweight 8x4 tipper. narrowly ■ eating the deadline for Euro-4 missions legislation.

The German manufacturer has etained a modest share of the UK eavy-duty 8x4 tipper market with heActros, but it has so far failed to teet the uniquely British demand ar a lighter model suitable for ggregates operations.

Following its first less-than-sucessful attempt to create an Atego based lightweight 8x4 tipper, M-B has come up with a UK-specific contender based on lessons learned first time round.

The previous development truck only achieved an acceptable weight by resorting to an under-powered 6,4-litre,1,300Nm engine.

An extensive weight reduction programme has now created an Axor 8x4 with a 12-litre straightsix producing between 1850 and 2,1001m, hub reduction axles and 16-speed gearbox. And it still weighs in at less than 9,200kg.

Weight saving measures include reduced chassis flitching, running without anti-roll bars on the first axle and fitting disc brakes, twoleaf front springs, lighter batteries and the smallest cab option.

The timing of the launch is significant, as it has beaten the deadline for Euro-4 — any later and it would have had to comply with the tougher limits immediately.

The initial specification is unlikely to change significantly before the arrival of Euro-4 next October, hut further weight reduction moves are in the pipeline including single-reduction axles and an eight-speed gearbox.These will compensate for the extra weight of the SCR supply system.
