The multi-million pound switch from Exel to Wincanton Distribution—Retail follows a "review" of its business by the retailer. The 130 Exel drivers, currently employed on the delivery of non-clothes products to Woolworths' stores throughout England and Wales, will move to Wincanton's payroll on 31 January.

In a statement issued last week, Exel says "the majority" of its staff will be paid the same wages by Wincanton, because the switch is subject to Transfer of Undertakings regulations.

Wincanton is refusing to comment, beyond admitting negotiations with Woolworths are at an "advanced stage" and that contracts have not yet been signed.

Exel vigorously denies industry allegations that poor service lead to the termination of the contract Woolworths says it is "delighted" that Exel will remain its contractor in Scotland. Exel employs about 20 drivers on Woolworth's Scottish store delivery.
