Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Restricting overnight driving to six nights in any fortnight — as Euro MPs have proposed this week — is a clumsy and unworkable solution to driver fatigue caused by cowboy bosses pushing their employees too hard.

If the proposals were taken on board by European Community decision-makers they would wreak havoc across the whole industry, particularly affecting those firms making regular overnight deliveries to factories, supermarkets, newspaper depots and outdoor markets.

Europe already has complex driving hours laws, which take into consideration both safety and flexibility for hauliers. Law-abiding companies and drivers should not be subject to undue stress, fatigue or pressure. Surely, the solution is not to slap on more restrictions but to better police the laws we do have and stop the dangerous, unscrupulous minority taking economic advantage of the majority who do obey the law.
