Nin support I The employee co-operative iroposed by municipally-owned 3arrow Borough Transport has on the support of Barrow-lnurness Borough Council's nilrig Labour group.
John Garrett, general mana;er of Barrow Borough Transiort, says because of the ,abour majority in the council, le now expects to get formal :ouncil approval in the next ew days, but the co-operative >Ian will still require final icceptance from Transport iecretary Paul Channon. If the plan is accepted, the 3et-up will be overseen by a nanagement committee cornarising two members of the exsting management, an indepenlent chairman, and two repre3entatives of the workforce — me from the shop floor and me from the road staff.
The company has 110 staff, t2 vehicles and one depot in Flindpool Road in Barrow-inFurness. Garrett says: "We think official council approval is sow no problem and hope all liscussions and proposals will l)e completed by the end of March 1989."
Ribble also approached the council over the possibility of a BBT buyout, but this was rejected by the authority.
