FATAL ACCIDENTS resulted in 47 per cent more goods vehicle drivers being killed in the second quarter of 1984, against the same period last year.

Provisional figures from the Department of Transport show that the number of drivers killed rose to 50. This came against a two per cent increase in goods vehicle traffic.

In the same period, serious injuries to goods vehicle drivers fell by eight per cent to 426, and slight injuries rose by two per cent to 1,678.

There was a 16 person fall in the number of pedestrians hit by goods vehicles and killed or seriously injured in the first six months of this year, compared with the same period last year.

There was a 53 person increase in the number of pedal cyclists hit by goods vehicles and killed or seriously injured, while the comparable figure for motor cyclists fell by 12.
