CONFUSION between fact and fantasy has occurred in Mr Fred Hope's letter (CM, October 20), which claims that stopping distances are worsened by the incorporation of anti-lock.
His exact claim, quoted here so that my own comment may be neither misunderstood nor misrepresented, is that there is "no doubt that articulated vehicle brakes do suffer from increased stopping distances and premature brake wear where anti-lock has been fitted".
This remark can be dismissed in two words: not true. The facts are otherwise. Our own research shows that stopping distance is reduced by up to 20 per cent when anti-lock is fitted, and operator surveys have shown no evidence of increased brake wear.
