"There will be an awful stink if you don't deliver this load on time," Norfolk Line were told when they were given 48 hours to transport sixty drums of paper pulp from West Germany to Penzance in Cornwall, The stuff was needed for tests on a new incinerator plant in the Scilly Isles. After 50 hours paper pulp begins to ferment and to produce a terrible all-pervading smell, so the time margin was slim.
The pulp was loaded onto a Norfolk Line trailer near Cologne and, travelling on the company's ferryship Duke of Norfolk, from Scheveningen, Holland to Great Yarmouth, arrived in Penzance 411/2 hours after its original departure, with 81/2 hours' smelling time still to go.
Any suggestion that the load comprised the manuscript of Harold Wilson's memoirs is entirely false.
