Surrey gets more new deckers, goes all o-m-o

DELIVERY of more Leyland Atlantean double-deckers to NBC's London Country fleet has allowed the company to withdraw its last crewoperated buses in Surrey.

Three services were converted to o-m-o last weekend as part of a general service revision planned in conjunction with Surrey County Council, and this has enabled the release of more AEC Routemaster double-deckers for sale back to London Transport.

The changes coincided with LT's short-term bus improvement plan (stage two), but some alterations in the Sutton area have been delayed pending a Traffic Commissioners' hearing.

London Country aims to replace its last crew-operated buses in the Gravesend, Dart ford, Swanley, Grays, and Windsor areas towards the end of next year when a batch of 30 more Atlanteans arrives.

It is also replacing its fleet of AEC Swift and Merlin singledeck buses and coaches with B-series Leyland Nationals. A company spokesman told CM that the AECs had proved unreliable and expensive to maintain, and around 60 have already been offered for sale.
