AN £800m package for London's roads has been described as "too little and too late" by the campaign for better mobility, Movement for London, this week.
The money is to be spent between now and 1993 and is seen as a major strategy aimed at stopping the decline of industry in London.
But Movement for London has dismissed much of the plans as "pure cosmetics" and secretary Andrew Warren said that even when the 15 year plan is complete there will be no east-west route across London of dual carriageway standard.
"All we are being offered is a limited programme of junction widenings on some parts of the collection of signposts called the South Circular," he said He added that to pretend that the existing network of roads in South London will broadly suffice to attract industrial investment is quite ridiculous," said Mr Warren.
. Unless the roads in the area were substantially improved South London would become a dormitory, town.
What London needed was a major new construction programme over the next few years and not in the late 1980s — and this was the only way that potential investors would be attracted to London.
