ANY suggestion that future shortages of oil would mean a deduction in the commitment to road transport has been refuted by Freight Transport Association director general Hugh Featherstone.

He pointed out that the car and lorry as we know them will be running well into the twenty-first century — and their successors would be the same type although powered by a different fuel.

Speaking at the FTA Birmingham dinner Mr Featherstone added that for most freight the railways did not provide a suitable alternative mode of transport or any fuel economy.
