goods vehicles, mainly attics, and with the new regulations about to be introduced we are not sure as to what is legally in force at the present time.
Please answer the following points: Are the regulations related to vehicles plated for gross weight legally in force today? If they are, from what date did they take effect and will these vehicles be subject to further plating by the Minister of Transport in 1968?
Also, is it permissible for an unplated tractive unit to haul a plated trailer at the maximum gross weight, that is 30/32 tons or vice versa? And is there any regulation in current use governing the size of tractive units allowed to haul trailers built and plated to the C and U specifications?
AVehicles that are plated at present by
the manufacturer are in respect of the higher gross weights which came into operation on August 21, 1964. These plates are not legally approved, but when the vehicles go for their first annual test they will either be replated by the Ministry or the existing plates will be certified.
The same applies to vehicles built after January 1, 1968, all of which will have to be plated by the manufacturers. At some future date makers will be fitting legal plates but this is likely to occur only after a type approval scheme has been introduced.
To be able to operate at a train weight of 30/32 tons both parts of the outfit have to be plated for this weight. But there are no regulations separately detailing the size of tractive units than can run at the higher rates. and the specified axle spacings are in relation to the combined unit and semi-trailer.
