Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANNOUNCED today is a Rolls-Royceengined Seddon tractive unit. This is the 32:four 220, which has the 12.17-litre sixcylinder Eagle diesel developing 220 bhp at 2,100 rpm. This new model is designed for a 38-ton gross train weight but is at present plated in accordance with current regulations at 32 tons g.t.w.

As seen in the accompanying photograph, the 32:four 220 has a new version of the pressed steel Seddon Supa cab which is fully trimmed, has special seats and is fitted as standard with heater and screenwashers.

The engine, developing 605 lb.ft torque at 1,350 rpm, drives through a David Brown six-speed gearbox with overdrive top. The single-helical constant-mesh gears have ratios of 6.61, 3.91, 2.45, 1.56, 1 and 0.717. The single-dry-plate clutch is a mechanically operated 17in. unit and the double-reduction rear axle has planetary hub gears with ratios of 6.12, 6.75, 7.25, and 7.75.

A fully split braking system is employed, this being of the air/wedge type and having lock actuators to provide a mechanical parking-brake linkage to both front and rear axles. Front and rear axle ratings are 6 tons and 13 tons.

Seddon says it has planned this new model with an eye on 36/38-ton maxima for the UK. An example will be at the Scottish Show next week.
