SELF-STEERING axles in both single and twin-tyred forms are now being offered by Primrose Group Sales, Padiham, Lancs. Of Italian Ceschi basic design, they are suitable for weights up to six tons with single tyre equipment but with twin tyres are plated at up to 10 tons. British hubs and brake drums are fitted to the Italian axle assemblies; complete axles are available to other manufacturers as well as to operators.
No steering linkage is involved on these axles, which are therefore easy to fit either ahead of or behind an existing axle. Examples have already been fitted on rigid chassis and trailers—and a self-steering axle on a Guy four-wheeled tipper re-rated at 20 tons gross entered service on Monday with Robinson Bros. (Wray) Ltd.
A Primrose three-axle trailer with self steering third axle will be shown at Millburn Motors' special exhibition in Glasgow to coincide with the Scottish Show.
Primrose claim that use of this Ceschi axle can relieve axle overloading problems on four-wheelers in particular. A conversion of this type costing from £733 to £763 according to tyre equipment can raise the gross plated weight to 22 tons.
In a typical case, the single-tyred axle increases chassis weight by 22 cwt, of which the axle weight is 15 cwt. The 6-ton axle has 15.5 in by 7 in brakes, the 10-ton axle 16.5 in by 7 in.
The Ceschi axle steers itself because the pivot points of the stub axles are offset from the axle beam to produce pronounced caster action.
